Aaron Sowd - " I’ve always hated clowns"

The book is well on it's way, the only delays lately seem to be with updating the site. ;-) With that said, the book left the capable hands of Dan Goodsell and was turned over to the equally capable Aaron Sowd.

I’ve always hated clowns.

Maybe I should begin at the beginning. Before being traumatized by Barnum and Bailey I’ve always loved drawing. A great writer (I think it was F. Scott Fitzgerald) once said “paying a writer to write is like paying an alcoholic to drink; they’d do it anyway.” I think that applies to artists as well. It’s something we have to do. I know I have to, I just can’t believe that I actually get paid to do it on a daily basis. It’s the best scam ever! So keep that quote to yourself…

I live in Los Angeles, more specifically, the Culver City/Venice area. So how to sum up a town as large and diverse as Los Angeles in a single image? A town that I love? And sometimes hate?

With clowns, of course.

Dave Habben - Monstrous Mountains

Dave Habben has sent in his teaser shot and geo pic and he hails from the state I was born, Utah. Below is a teaser shot of Dave's illustration.

With the awesome Wasatch mountains as a backdrop, Dave tells us his story of inspiration.

Dave writes:

"This is my second time to live in the beautiful Wasatch mountains and I love the inspiration that comes from the amazing spring and summer weather we have here. My sketchbook is a place for unrestricted exploration, so it often ends up looking like a mess. I'll wash the pages in paint and markers, collage, etc. Anything. People are often surprised by this because my finished work tends to be much more clean and straightforward. Its like starting with pile of random bits and carving it down to a basic idea."

Dan Goodsell has sent in his teaser shot and I am still waiting to get his write up. SO Check back often because the book is once again on the move!

A few words ...

It has been a great while since Jeff or I have posted anything to this site. The book is only half filled to this point and a few participants have held onto this book way beyond the time we have allotted to them. As a result, the book is so far past the project completion deadline, I'm surprised we have any anticipation from the remaining participants signed up. The final deadline to have this project completed was January 2009, 5 months ago. I'm sure some of you feel the same level of frustration that Jeff and I are going through.

I want to be as clear and tactful as possible here. If you signed up for this project and decide it's too much for you to handle when the book arrives, please, send the book forward to the next participant. It hasn't been fair to those that have followed the rules and those still waiting to participate. If you are still not sure of the guidelines, please take a closer look at them HERE.

Dave Habben and Dan Goodsell have sent in their teasers and I am still waiting for Dan's backstory. Kudos to both of them for keeping the book moving after such a long and stagnant period.

Ben Schlitter - Overlapping Customs

Last night I received a teaser and geo image from illustrator Ben Schlitter.

The Blank Book made a hop and skip when it initially went to Kansas and was then forwarded to Ben's new digs on the West Coast. Here we see Ben on a nice sunny Beach with the Blank Book Box. I don't know about most of you, but I certainly wish I could spend my winters at this location.

Ben writes:

For twenty-six years I lived in small-town western Kansas. In 2007 I made the jump to the Los Angeles area, ending up in the city of Santa Monica. The contrast is pronounced. Overlapping cultures and customs provide a never ending cast of characters and inspiration. It's a busy city that seems to have grown organically, like a giant blob that oozed from maybe two or three main points but with no real coherent plan.

I built my drawing in a similar way, letting it expand but with no concrete vision of the final form.

The book is finally back on track and headed back toward Maryland where I will be personally handing it off to Ray Lederer.

Nathan Santistevan - Denver Chillin'

Nathan has been a good sport! I asked him to help us revive this project and he has come through for us by providing a glimpse of the project as it has evolved into various new dynamics (see Back on Track).

Nathan writes:

Here I am standing in front of The Denver Millennium Bridge - the world’s first cable-stayed bridge using its post-tensioned structural construction. It was built during my hiatus from Colorado at the turn of the century. It was cold this day. Very cold. I had two icicle toddlers at my feet and a patient wife behind the camera.

I also repaired the box that was coming apart at the seams. A little wood glue and a couple of clamps did the trick. The shipping box that is marked up with drawings is no longer getting shipped in, but drawn on. We are sending it around in a new Priority box.

The SFG BBP is now en route to the next participant, Ben Schlitter!

Back on Track!

After a long and unwelcome hiatus, multiple inquiries, and a little bit of friendly persuasion, the SFG Blank Book is finally back on track!

When the Blank Book Project finally made its way out of the Lone Star State and landed in the Mile-high city, I asked Nathan Santistevan, a.k.a. Doggy Doodle, if he could provide me with a snap shot showing the condition of the shipping box. I had heard from past participants that it was covered with graffiti, used as an additional creative medium. After seeing the shots (below), I wasn’t disappointed. The box has a great flavor of travel.

Nathan informed me that the original cardboard shipping box is no longer being used strictly for shipping, but as a specified medium for additional sketching and expression. So, we are now sending it around in a new priority box. The images above show how the cardboard box has evolved into a piece of art as well.

Another area of interest in the SFG Blank Book is the inside front cover. Participants have been placing stamps, or illustrated versions of stamps, on the cover. I’m sure after the book completes it rounds, this too will be an interesting visual story to illustrate the travels of the book. See the image below.

Patricia Zapata - Texas Green

It's been awhile since the last post, but the wait was worth it. Patricia Zapata, a graphic designer with over 10 years experience in consumer product design, has graced the pages of the BBP with her unique style.

Hailing from Kingwood, Texas, located just North of Houston, we see Patricia by the San jacinto river and the area's newest development, Kings Harbor, which recently opened and is a concentrated area of office space and restaurants.

The thing I love the most about living in Kingwood is how green it is. There are trees everywhere and the Greentrails lead pedestrians through most of it. It’s hard to believe that all of this is only a 25 minute drive from skyscraper-laden downtown Houston. Living in this suburban community is like living in a cocoon of sorts. A few years back I used to complain about being ‘far away’ from everything but I don’t think I could picture myself in any other part of the city.

The book is now on it's way to Nick Ramos in Georgetown, Texas.

Mike Maihack - Moolicious

Mike writes:

As of this morning the Blank Book is on its way to Kingwood, TX! Here’s a snippet from one of my pages and a pic of me in front of my favorite Ice Cream Shoppe in Tampa, Maggie Moos (not really a landmark, I just really wanted some ice cream).

My two pages are pretty much a Cow & Buffalo comic. The intention was to have them talking about some of the history and sites around Tampa, but they ended up mostly arguing back and forth instead. And there’s no color, because I forgot how to color when I’m not on a computer. Still, it should make for a somewhat interesting read.

The book is now enroute to our next participant, Patricia Zapata.

Christian Elden - Paramount Goodness

This morning I received images from Christian Elden in Indiana. The Blank Book is really starting to take shape and I can't wait to finally see all of the incredible illustration that grace the pages.

This is Christian Elder proudly displaying the SFG BBP Box in front of Anderson's historic Paramount Theatre.

I just packed the box up tonight & will send it out tomorrow.

I decided to use one page as a tiny history lesson on my town, and the other is dedicated to the landmark I chose, the historic Paramount Theatre.

Entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole, Roberta Peters, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Louie Armstrong, Woody Herman, and Gene Autry all performed there in its heyday.

I used a couple different styles, too, to mix it up. I was really inspired by all the other participants' work already in the book -- this thing is gonna be awesome & I'm glad I was able to contribute a small piece!

Beth Berst-Gregory

Ellwood House

This past weekend I received notice from Beth Berst-Gregory that she had complete her portion of the book. I had worries that the book had been lost due to not hearing from the past few participants. I was relieved when Beth sent me her images and teaser shot. Thankfully the book is still on track. I have updated the estimated arrival dates, so please check them if you haven't partcipated yet.

So, with out further rant, I present Beth's contribution.

I adored working on this collaborative project. From the moment I opened the book, the creative energy from all the artists' visions swirled off the pages and into my home. It was wonderful to see all of the art up close and personal, to appreciate the lines and marks that were created by hand and all united there in the form of The Blank Book.

This project's theme made me step back and view my town in a new way. To wrap up the essence of home into something simplistic, familiar & above all - honest.

The blankbook is now in the hands of Christian Elden.

Allan Lorde - Winnipeg Goodness

Another "cool" email from the great white north is sent my way. This time from Allan Lorde, our 17th participant to grace the blank book with his work.

Allan sent me a few pictures that tell a short story of the blank book's chilling journey of Winnipeg. First off is the image of Allan handing over the book to Jeope Wolfe. Once the book arrived, Allan immediately handed it off to Jeope. This afforded Jeope the time he needed to participate in this project. Once finished, Jeope then returned the book to Allan. Now Allan has a shot at doing his thing with the Blank Book. Get it? I hope so, because I don't think I could type it in any other way.

Next we see Allan and his lovely Fiancée in front of the historic Forks market. The BBP Box looks like it is handling the frigid temps rather nicely.

And finally, here is a small section, or teaser shot, of Allan's work in the blank book.

Hey there! It took me a while to figure out what aspect of Winnipeg life I wanted to depict in my portion of the SFG Blank Book. In the end, I had to go with Winter, not only because I love it, but also because of how the season is practically inseparable from any discussion about this prairie city.

Unflagging spirit during the harshest of conditions is part of Winnipeg's character. My fiancée and I were celebrating our 10th anniversary as a couple this weekend, so I had the book a little longer than I had planned. Hopefully, it'll reach Matt with much speed!

Thanks again for having me involved! This has been fun.

The book is right on schedule and we thank our good neighbors to the north for their awesome participation.

Jeope Wolfe - Prairie City Chillin'

Jeope Wolfe sent in his images this morning and I have to say they are very cool! No pun intended.

Jeope let me know that he and Allan Lorde have The Good Book in their clutches. It arrived this past weekend. Jeope finished up his portion of it last night, and has now passed over to Allan to complete and ship when he's done.

Greetings, followers of the Good (Sketch) Book!

This is me atop a balcony of the building I work at, the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre in Manitoba, Canada. It's a fine place to be three seasons of the year birds, nature, endless prairie skies but you've caught me in the dead of winter so it's more like The Shining right now (this photo was taken when it was -30°C). So the illustration I did entirely indoors, 'natch. My wife posed for some reference photos, bundled in her deep-winter best, but ironically we did the shoot in the living room."

Great shots Jeope. I'm sure Allan's stuff is going to be just as "cool."

Pati Montero de Cabana - Montreal, CA

The Blank Book has crossed the border to the north into Montreal, Canada and into the hands of Pati Montero de Cabana. Pati sent me some great shots of herself with the BBP Box in front of Saint Joseph’s Oratory.

Even with all the lovely snow and frigid temperatures, the BBP Box somehow manages to stay hot.

Below is a small section of Pati's illustration now gracing the pages of the blank book.

Pati writes:

I've only known Montreal for six months. Sometimes it seems like Babel to me, as everyday I can share different aspects of my life with people from around the world. I heart that.

My favorite part of the island is the Mount Royal from which the city took its name. There is a big park with a terrific view of Montreal and people have fun each time of the year, mostly in winter, when it's the time for playing in the ice/snow.

This is quite a discovery to me, as is it the first time I can actually touch the snow. There is snow in Venezuela, but not as much as here and definitely not in Maracaibo, the city where I come from. So, I'm like a little kid amazed by winter and amused as a result of the impression it causes on people that have had winter during their whole lives.

That's why all I illustrate recently has some snow to show.

Stuart Wade - West Chester

This evening I received some images and short write up from Stuart Wade, our 13th participant on the list. I especially like how Stuart somehow was able to hang the Blank Book Box on a Christmas Tree. Great shot Stuart.

Historic Downtown West Chester is almost entirely constructed of bricks. The trees in downtown West Chester are doing their best to change that.

On my walk home from work I pass a local fuel station and everybody seems to have the same look every time. I know this isn't a unique perspective on my geographical location but it shows how we all are alike in our indignation of the current state of fuel prices. At least in the U.S. I rarely see people smiling while pumping gas. Unless they are inhaling so much that they get light-headed and accidentally crack a smile.

At the top of one of my sketch pages you find a quick rendering outside the Brooklyn Museum of Art as seen in the torrential rain. If you look beneath the museum sketch and to your left you'll see one of my sneakiest and silliest habits. Sometimes I like drawing people the way I imagine they'd look in their underwear while on my daily commute to 23rd street on the F train. Word to the wise, make sure no one catches you cartooning them in their panties, otherwise you'll have a lot to explain. . . On your right, turned kinda topsy is the view from my lovely Brooklyn bedroom. Awww... Brooklyn, I'll love you forever.

Tommy Kane - Brooklyn, NY

Yesterday I received Tommy Kane's teaser shot submission to the SFG Blank Book. Tommy has just gone through an overwhelming move and the book landed on him right in the middle of this chaotic time. We just want to let Tommy know that we appreciate his time and sacrifice to be a part of this project.

This sketch is of my new neighborhood. I sat outside on my little stool and froze my skinny white ass off. I love how the road signs for the Brooklyn Queens expressway peek over the tops of the buildings. Hey! Paul Giamatti, the actor, just walked by me.

Again, Jeff and I want to pass along our gratitude to Tommy for taking the time out of his overwhelming schedule to add to the value this project. Thanks Tommy! We wish you well in your new digs and hopefully the chaos created by the move will settle soon.

Vincent Altamore - Thomas Nast

This evening I decide to do one last check of my email before calling it a night and got a surprise email from Vincent Altamore. Everytime I see these emails come in from the project participants my pulse jumps in anticipation to read the stories and see the images that are submitted. Vincent's submission was no exception. His story and teaser shot are intriguing. See for yourself by continuing to reading on.

Vincent writes:

"Even though Blank Book gave me a couple of sleepless nights I have to say it's been fun to participate in BBP.

My contribution to the sketchbook has a "Thomas Nast" theme. Mr. Nast, for anyone not familiar with his work, was a Political Cartoonist and Illustrator who created Columbia, the symbol of America. He also created the concept of the Republican elephant and Democratic donkey as well as had a hand in how Uncle Sam looks today. Nast along with Daumier and Dore were just a few of my favorite "caricaturists" when growing up. I would copy their Illustrations mostly to help me learn how to crosshatch and distort faces.

Having moved from Flushing, Queens (Go Mets!) to Morris Plains eight years ago I was totally delighted to find out that Nast had lived in Morristown just about a mile from my own home. It seems he had moved his family there to keep them out of harms way while he was exposing the corrupt NY government of William "Boss" Tweed with his cartoons for Harper's Weekly...which by the way helped in bringing Tweed to justice...ah yes, the power of the pen!

So now the little wooden box has left my home (Jake was very upset and decided he wouldn’t eat his dinner...but that only lasted for 10 minutes) and has moved on to the Wayne, NJ, doorstep of Gary Fields. Unfortunately, as it was with Jim, time constraints and previous commitments prevented an in-person transfer of Blank Book but I'm sure Emile the FedEx guy has everything under control! Have fun Gary!!"

Jeff and I couldn't have said it any better. Be on the look out Gary! The BBP is on it's way!

Vincent Altamore - Receives Special Delivery

The SFG Blank Book Projects lands in Morris Plains, NJ, and into the talented hands of illustrator, Vincent Altamore right on schedule.

Vincent writes:

"I Just wanted to provide a little update on "Blank Book". It arrived late yesterday afternoon via special delivery arranged by the talented and super nice guy, Jim Bradshaw. I have tell you the work done so far is absolutely wonderful...this will definitely be a joy for everyone who receives it!!

Off to work on my pages now...and it might be a bit tough to separate Jake from the packing box, he thinks he has a new toy!"

It looks like Jeff and I will have to send Jake a nice soup bone to distract him long enough to get the box shipped to the seventh illustrator on the list, Gary Fields.

Jim Bradshaw - Ocean City

Jim Bradshaw sent me some really cool images and a great story behind his illustration and the awesome meeting he had with Adam Levine.

Jim writes:

"I chose the whole state of New Jersey for my topic because my A.D.D. would not allow me to stay on one topic or location. I blended some of my favorite boardwalks in the illustration as well as many other mystery things about me and New Jersey.

This has been an awesome experience. I'm so glad I was on Adam's "next to" list because we had a great evening. Just about all my friends are not creative types. I don't really talk art or creativity with them because I have gotten sick of that glassy eyed, bored, what on earth are you talking about look on their faces. The online community is a great place to find people who "get you."

Meeting with Adam in person was a refreshing blast of creative energy that I am still stoked about. We art types really need to connect MORE and I am totally thankful to you and Jeff for putting forth the effort to make this one happen. The food was great at Juanitos but we had trouble getting to it. We couldn't shut off the art talk and the gawking at each others moleskins.

Adam surprised me with a hand made stuffed character that he named Paco. Hmmm... I think the Mexican restaurant might have had something to do with the name. He has a whole line of adoptable creatures, he named "Adimals", so I have a new pal for my studio. I have had a desire to get into making my own as well and want to hear more from Adam on that. We had so much in common and hit it off big. There was barely a topic that we had enough time to fully talk out. Adam and I will definitely be getting together again. Thanks to SFGBBP, I have a cool new friend. And not just him, but his girlfriend, Kat who joined us and is into animation as well as Adam and had no trouble blending in with us.

The pics of me and BBP are on the ferris wheel at Ocean City, NJ. You can see the beach in the background. The little BBP box and I also bonded quite nicely. I'll miss the little fellow. It was a perfect mild, breezy, September day at the boardwalk and we both shed a tear or two when I shipped him.

Vince Altamore is next and should be getting his package today or tomorrow. Go Vince Go!!! Anyone who hangs out at the SFG site knows that Vincenzo is a kick-butt caricature artist. It didn't work out for Vince and me to meet because of geography and time constraints. I can't wait to see what he will come up with. Peace to all my SFGers."

Awesome story Jim and that illustration looks like a perfect addition to the Sugar Frosted Goodness Blank Book of delights.

Adam Levine - Coffee Flavored Air

This morning I got a nice surprise in my email from Adam Levine. He sent me some really cool images and a great story behind his illustration and the awesome meeting he had with Jim Bradshaw, our next illustrator in line to work in the blank book.

The title of Adam's piece is: "Coffee Flavored Air."

Adam writes:

"I chose to draw the main drag in downtown Freehold, NJ. I picked Freehold because I've always lived on its border and I love the rich and slightly obscure history that the town has to offer. It's a beautiful little reminder of what I think of when I hear the phrase "A little slice of Americana." I just drew what I saw, both in reality and what brews inside my head. Mixing the two was lots of fun. This has been such a fun project, I'm jealous of the people at the end of the list who get to flip through all those fun pages yet to come in person!"

Adam has also passed the book off to Jim Bradshaw and his back story of the meeting made me wish I was there to experience this meeting of the creative and great minds.

Adam again writes:

"If I had to sum up what took place last night I would simply say it was a "meeting of the minds!" I have been crazy lucky to have had yet another great experience in meeting a fellow SFGer. If happiness and fun were considered diseases than we would have been quarantined last night for sure.

Being a fan of Jim's work I was already stoked to meet him but I guess I didn't realize just how well we'd hit it off. We met at an authentic Mexican restaurant named Juanitos in Red Bank NJ on a street with (and I'm not exaggerating) no less than four places named Juanitos. The food was excellent...when we finally ordered. We were too busy exchanging ideas and rummaging through each other's sketchbooks. We waited for my girlfriend but the time slipped right past us. We got there at dinner time and stayed until they literally closed the place down. They shut off the lights after we walked out the door, and four hours later we realized that we still didn't have enough time.

I loved being a part of this project and I really hope it encourages people to meet in person if they can. Thanks again to you and Jeff for setting this thing up, I had a blast!"

Jeff and I are excited to see this book take off and become such a dynamic presence. We are waiting in anticipation to see what Jim Bradshaw has in store for this Sugar Frosted adventure.

"Talk about a fun time! Well I will...So like you've already heard, I met with Melinda and my girlfriend the other day to pass off the book. I had a blast. It was nice to meet another artist, especially from SFG!

We met at a train station, went to a restaurant for dinner and wound up in a colorful sugary frosted wonderland! The restaurant was nice because it gave us time to get to know each other. We talked about SFG, the people who's work we admire, and tons of dorky art related topics. There was never an awkward moment or a deafening silence. We spoke of our pasts, and where we were going from here. We both brought our current sketch books and swapped them as we explored the fun stuff that drips out of our heads and lands in our moleskines. For dessert, we wound up at a cute little ice cream joint known as "40 Flavors." The colors were rich and the ice cream was richer. We all sat around at a picnic table and continued to bond over frozen gooey goodness. This project is such a great idea and I can't wait to see how it evolves over the coming months. I hope everyone has an experience like we did.

Melinda Beavers - Van Vleck Gardens

Today, Melinda Beavers sent me the back story and teaser shot of her blank book illustration. I can't wait to see the complete sketch.

The title of her piece is: "In the Garden"

Melinda writes:

"Van Vleck Gardens in Montclair. I chose this setting as the subject of my contribution. Being only 2 blocks from my apartment, I have walked here many times. It is open to the public daily all year round. Peaceful, serene, and incredibly inspiring, it reminds me of all the hidden treasures Montclair has to offer, as well as it’s incredible appreciation for the arts and culture. This project has actually been a great way for me to look at my time here and reminisce as I say goodbye to Montclair. I will be moving to New Mexico next month, I hope my new home is as diverse and extraordinary as Montclair has been. "

Yesterday afternoon Melinda personally passed the SFG Blank Book on to Adam Levine in an appropriate setting called "40 Flavors." The above shot is a reflection of the meeting in the window of the 40 Flavors ice cream shop. Pictured from left to righ: Kat (Adam’s girlfriend), Melinda, and Adam, appreciating some Sugar Frosted Goodness.

Apparently during the meeting, some of the Sugar Frosted Goodness was caught trying to escape the box. It looks like the meeting between Melinda and Adam was a lot of fun.

Adam Levine now has the blank book and has informed me that he will be handing the book off personally to Jim Bradshaw.

Michelle Lana - King Street

This afternoon, Michelle Lana sent me the back story and teaser shot of her blank book illustration. I have to say, "it has me intrigued."

The title of her piece is: "Historic Streets of Old Town Alexandria: King St."

Michelle writes:

"What captured and inspired me the most are the streets of Old Town Alexandria. The charming cobblestone pavements, colonial houses and churches, museums, shops and restaurants are all nestled among many wonderful musuems and historic landmarks.

There are many sights to see such as the Gadsby Tavern and museum where George Washington celebrated birthdays, old buildings turned into cute little shops and small boutiques where you will see artists and works for sale. The shops and buildings are adorable - there really is something for everyone here!!"

The SFG Blank Book is now on it's way to Melinda Beavers in New Jersey. Michelle informed me she took the above shot of the box in her car on the way to ship it out, and that the book was shipped today at 12:50 p.m.

The Book is Launched

Today the SFG Blank Book got it's launch and has started the trek with Michelle Lana, the second illustrator on the list.

I was fortunate enough to work close enough to Michelle to make arrangements for the both of us to meet for lunch rather than shipping the box across town. We both agreed to meet on August 10th, which would have been the scheduled arrival date for her to receive the book had I have shipped it.

In my haste to making lunch arrangements, I didn't ask Michelle what she looked like or what she would be wearing, so I awkwardly walked into a very busy Panera Bakery expecting to get lost in the Friday lunchtime crowd. Michelle recognized me right off and called my name from across the crowded room. I guess I was the only guy carrying a big cardboard box and that gave me away. I'm sure it wasn't my devilishly good looks.

Michelle was stoked! I could see the excitement immediately as she stared at the cardboard box I had under my arm. I decided rather than making her go through the torture of having to wait, I would open the box and show her the book before we ordered our food. We both went over the shipping list and I explained what the vellum in the bottom of the box was for (the vellum is to place between the pages to protect your work).

Michelle had many questions and through her questions I hope to shed further light on this project:

1. What can I draw?
You may draw anything you want. A person, place, or thing, as long as it is significant to your geographic location.

2. Do I have to draw something from my present town?"
No, you may draw something from your state, or a large city that is close by that gives a feel for where you live. You could illustrate an historical event, like a guy in your town that invented the egg beater.

3. Do I have to express ship the box?
No, you may send it to the next recipient using ground shipping.

4. Where should I take a picture of myself with the box?
I would recomment an interesting landmark or place that reflects the flavor of where you live. Once you have these pictures, send them to Jeff or myself with an interesting story so I can post them to the this site.

After we talked and ate our lunch, Michelle and I have agreed to meet again and hang out down in Old Town Alexandria. This time I'm taking my wife along. She loves a restaurant down there call Bull Feathers. I think the advantage of meeting in person offers a great opportunity to start a new friendship and to meet the person behind the illustration. I look forward to building a lasting freindship with Michelle and I also look forward to meeting many other SFG illustrators in the future.

Steph Doyle - Fritchie House

When I decided to do my sketch for the SFG Blank Book Project, I first planned an exploration of the history in my present home town of Frederick, Maryland. The town was here during the founding of the nation and was called home by many historically famous people.

Francis Scott Key, the composer of the National Anthem, was born and buried here. Thomas Johnson, the first Govenor of Maryland, was born and buried here. But I wanted to highlight a person that didn't fit the typical stereotype of a local hero or legend. I wanted to cover someone that was different.

Above is a small section of my illustration. This window was the place where 96 year-old Barbara Fritchie hung out in September, 1862, waving the Stars and Strips in defiance of Stonewall Jackson's troops as they marched through town. Legend has it that she touched the General's heart with her words and was spared due to her incredible devotion to her country.

Contact Steph Doyle as soon as you receive the box.

Take a photo of yourself holding the shipping box at a location near an interesting landmark.

Take a photo of a small section of your illustration upon completion. We refer to this photo as a "teaser shot."

Write a short background story to accompany the teaser shot.

Send the photos and short write-up to Steph Doyle to be posted to the SFG Blank Book Flickr account. This will enable the map function to present participant image(s) and site locations.

You may be asking yourself, what is this project all about?

We have provided a few questions and answers that may shed some light on this project. If you have any additional questions that aren't covered here, please use the comments section, linked at the bottom of this post, and we will answer you as soon as we are able.

What is the SFG Blank Book Project?
For 500 days, a sketchbook will be sent from Washington DC to 50 illustrators around the world. The book will reach its final destination approximately mid-December, 2008.

Who can participate?
The first 50 illustrators to sign up. When signing up, we will need your name, actual address (no p.o. boxes), and a phone number. We will not share any of this information with anybody. This infomation is to be used to create a shipping list. We would also like a link to your portfolio site or to samples of your work posted to blog or sharing account like Flickr.

How much will it cost to participate?
Once we get the final list of participants, we will 'map out a route' and calculate the total shipping cost through a provider.

What if I sign up, but can’t participate when the book arrives?
Due to the process involved in getting this book from illustrator to illustrator, we ask for dedicated participants only. If the book arrives during an emergency situation and you are unable to participate, you may forward the book to the next participant. This will be strictly handled on a case-by-case basis.

Is there a theme for this book?
Yes. We want you to illustrate something that is significant or interesting about your geographic location. This will give the other participants the opportunity to visually experience your part of the world.

How many pages do I get?
Each illustrator is given 4 pages in the book (2 pages, front and back). The first page being a hand written introduction, the second and third pages will be used for the composition, and the fourth page will be left blank.

Are there any restrictions pertaining to the type of medium I may use?
No, but please be aware that the pages in the book are made up of a medium weight paper and will curl and buckle if certain types of wet medium are used. Also please keep in mind that pastels, chalks, or any other medium that will smudge should be protected with some type of fixative.

How can I protect my pages within the book?
We will be providing thin sheets of vellum in the shipping box that will accompany the book. Please place a sheet of vellum between the pages prior to shipping to the next illustrator.

Once I finish, to whom do I ship the book?
We will be providing a list of participants to accompany the book in the shipping box. Each illustrator will place a line through their name once the book arrives, and after completion, forward the book to the next person on the list.

What is going to happen to the book when it’s completed?
The book will be digitally published to PDF and placed on the blank book site for all to see. We may seek other venues to show the book.

Where can I go to see the progress of this project?
We will be posting the progress on this site. We strongly encourage all participants to shoot a teaser shot of their work along with a shot of themselves holding or standing next to the blank book box (see Shipping Box) prior to sending off to the next participant, then email the images to Jeff or Steph to be posted on this site.

Are there going to be other blank book projects?
Yes. We will do another launch this coming winter.

The Shipping Box

Here are shots of the box that will house SFG Blank Book during it's journey from artist to artist. Other items accompanying the sketchbook will be thin sheets of vellum to place between the finished pages for protection, a shipping list that will identify the person the box will be shipped to next, an outline intoduction including instructions on page usage within the blank book.

You can see that this sketchbook will be packed nicely into the box for proection during the long journey it must take from artist to artist.
